International Women's Day 2017
Today is International Women’s Day. On this day the world celebrates the economic, social and political achievements of women worldwide.
It is also a day to look at the challenges that still need to be tackled, such as violence against women and discrimination. To celebrate this important day in China, the Embassy of the Netherlands, the European Union and the United Nations Theme Group on Gender organized an expert discussion on the issue of domestic violence. In his speech Mr. André Driessen - Chargé d’affaires of the Netherlands Embassy – stressed that domestic violence is a serious global challenge: “It occurs in a place where people should feel safe and loved: at home. Both in rich homes and in poor homes. In Europe, in The Netherlands and in China.”.
In March 2016, China’s first ever national Anti-Domestic Violence Law entered into force. This is an important first step by the government to address domestic violence. During the event, members of civil society and the audience discussed the benefits of the law and the challenges that they face in the implementation. “We are ready to cooperate with China – with the government and civil society – to share knowledge and experience and enter into dialogue on how to make sure this legislation reaches the intended results”, said Mr. Driessen.
One essential tool to prevent and eliminate domestic violence is to raise public awareness. Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) made a strong video called 'Don’t cover it up, step up!' about violence within marriage. This video recently won the Social Impact Media Award 2017.
